If your desire is to work out at home, you will need certain pieces of equipment. These include…
- Olympic Barbell Set
- Power Rack with Lat pulldown
- Dumbbells
- Weight lifting shoes
- Weight lifting belt
- A flat bench
- An adjustable bench
- Cardio equipment (treadmill, bike, rowing machine, etc.)
Most of the items discussed below are what I have, or similar to, the equipment I have in my own garage gym.
Weight Lifting Shoes
If you intend to embark on a serious weight lifting program that will involve squats, deadlifts, overhead presses and perhaps Olympic style lifts, you will need a pair of weight lifting shoes.
These are an absolute must to provide you with greater stability while performing these lifts.
The shoes I wear are these shoes by Nordic Lifting. Check them out on Amazon by clicking on the link below the image.
Dominion Weight Lifting Belt
The second most important tool you will need if you intend to get into strength training is a weight lifting belt.
I highly recommend this Dominion Weight Lifting Belt, which I personally use.
You can learn more about it on Amazon by clicking the link under the image.
Olympic Barbell Set
The most important piece of equipment you will need is a barbell and weight plates.
The standard set comes with a 45 pound barbell and 255 pounds of weight plates. That is a good place to start.
Amazon offers a variety of options. Click on the link below the image to see what you can find.
Marcy Home Gym Cage
This Marcy Home Gym Cage is what I have in my garage gym. It is suitable for small spaces and low ceiling clearances (about 7 feet).
It comes with a lat pulldown and seated row attachment, parallel dip bars, multi-grip pull up bar and safety pins.
You can perform a wide variety of exercises with this piece of equipment, including squats, bench press, overhead press, dead lift, pull ups, multi-grip lat pull downs, etc.
It is a durable, but fairly light weight piece of equipment, so if you are a larger person, and you have more space, you will want to go with a larger unit.

Adjustable Dumbbells
Since I am low on space in my garage gym, I don’t have room for a complete set of dumbbells up to at least 50 pounds.
I have a set of Bowflex Selectech Adjustable dumbbells and I have owned them since 2012. I highly recommend!
